TRUMPF, Inc., the world’s largest industrial laser manufacturer, is looking for a Mechatronics Engineering Intern to join the Laser Applications Lab in Santa Clara, CA. The Lab is expanding, and we are looking for someone to help with equipment set-up, programming, basic research duties and special materials study projects. The intern will receive exposure to the use of CW, nano-second and ultrafast lasers and applications in an industrial environment including optics use, laser process development, equipment programming, metrology, and laser safety. Available part-time now and full time during the summer break, this could be ideal for someone currently enrolled in a South Bay/Silicon Valley university in an upper division Bachelor’s, or Master’s, or Doctorate level degree program.

 Principle Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of an applications engineer, perform basic engineering and scientific responsibilities such as equipment programming, lab layout, data collection, process work, and documentation.

  • Participate as a multidisciplinary engineering team member
  • Use laser scanning and confocal microscopes to document application test results
  • Creating written instructions, documentation of procedures and application lab reports
  • Assist with ultrafast, CW and nanosecond laser application tests and process development
  • Preparation of Excel spreadsheets for calculations and basic optical modeling
  • Basic software programming for operating motion controller and laser scanner

Your profile

Education & Experience

  • Applicant should be enrolled in a 4-year program with a STEM major
  • Proficiency with basic Office Productivity software (Excel) needed. 
  • A science, engineering, mechatronics or other technical background capable of learning optics, programming, and microscope use is required. 
  • Solid Works, Python and G-code programming experience desirable. 
  • Optics or laser experience is a plus
